ABOUT OUR FARMING METHODS
We have been using organic farming methods for over 40 years. We do not use toxic sprays or artificial fertilizers of any kind. Soil amendments include compost, leaves, chicken litter (never within six months of planting root crops), Jersey green sand, rock phosphate, lime, wood ashes and other approved organic amendments and controls as required. We have belonged to the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association for over 30 years, and, because we fall well under the minimum size to be officially "certified organic" by the USDA, we are allowed to use the designation "organic" as long as we comply with organic standards. We are basically a subsistence farm and preserve our produce for the cold winter months. Each year we put up over 800 quarts of canned goods in addition to filling the freezers and root cellar. It's amazing how much food we can produce on a small piece of land, considering that we knew nothing about organic farming when we started. With the price of oil increasing and becoming ever more scarce, industrialized agriculture will rapidly decline. Communities will need to begin securing their own food supply locally. Start growing your own garden, even if you start small, or become friends with your local farmers. |
